Wendy Sergeant workshop on Tues 12th Oct

People of Note invites you to join us for an evening of singing. Along with friendship, inspirational leadership – and fun! This workshop is open to all, as with the rest of our Autumn programme.

We’re welcoming back experienced and popular choir leader Wendy Sergeant – an old friend to the choir and a delight in store for those new to her.  Wendy is also offering a session on 14th Sept.

Wendy’s style of teaching is uplifting and inspiring.  She teaches songs by ear and the harmonies build like magic.  Whether you are a confident singer or have only ever sung in the privacy of your own bathroom she will help you use your voice effectively and you’ll find yourself singing four part harmony without really trying.

Wendy directs the 250 strong “Gordano Gorgeous Chorus” with singers from Portishead, Clevedon and Pill, and runs, with Catherine Smith, Vibe pop/rock choir. She directs and sings with 16 piece a cappella group “The Chandeliers”. She is currently doing the two year “Professional Masters in Innovative Choir Leading” at RAMA – the Danish Royal College of Music and is looking forward to using new skills to teach and conduct her choirs. She is well-known in the Bristol choir scene and beyond, and her arrangements of songs for community choirs are well-loved for being fun and easy to sing while having the power to thrill singers and audiences alike. She arranges and teaches songs from all sorts of genres – world music (many from Nickomo), jazz, pop, folk etc. Some of her arrangements are available for sale on ChoirCommunity.net

We’re back! Joyous celebration with Nickomo

A huge thanks to all those who attended the PoN Celebration Event last Sunday, it was such a joyous occasion and testament to the quality and dedication of our leaders Nickomo and Rasullah.

The feelings of love and joy shared amongst us all was palpable. Friends greeted each other, shared their experiences, laughed, and of course cried together, as our joy was also mixed with sadness.

We all knew that it was our farewell to two much loved and respected people. Throughout the afternoon, many of us were able to thank them personally and to share how much the PON Choir has meant to us.

Over the 20 years Nickomo and Rasullah have created a family and like all families, strong bonds are formed that hold people together and we certainly felt like one big family as we sang our first song Thina Simunye. To experience them both leading us once more with such energy and composure, was a truly moving and memorable moment that will remain with us all.

We will now carry on their legacy and by keeping the spirit of the PON Choir alive, we can encourage new generations of singers to join our family for years to come.

The special souvenir programme, with the words and photos from the past 20 years can be downloaded here.

And here’s a video of our first song, PoN favourite Thina Simunye – We Are Family.

We’re now looking forward to the autumn programme, starting with Wendy Sergeant on Tuesday 14th Sept, and our first Saturday workshop on Saturday 18th with Eliza Fyfe. Do join us, all welcome!

Workshop with Eliza Fyfe on Sat 18th September, 10.00 – 3.00 pm

People of Note invites you to join us for a day workshop (our first of a new era) with exciting young choir leader Eliza Fyfe. We’re in the lovely airy venue of St Paul’s Southville, with plenty of space.

Eliza (elizafyfe.com) is a singing teacher and choir director covering a wide range of popular music. She writes her own arrangements tailored to the group she’s working with. After leaving uni with a degree in Commercial Music, she was determined to start her own choir which she did in 2016, Bristol Choir Brigade. She has worked with the BBC and Silverback Films running singing workshops. Here’s a video of her in action: https://youtu.be/C5MuAM1UxMs

She also runs a virtual choir, ChoirCast, born out of lockdown which has gone global. Have a look at www.choircast.com

Evening of Singing with Rosie Sleightholme #1 on Tues 21st Sept, 7.30 – 9.30 pm

People of Note invites you to join us for an evening of singing (yes, it’s finally back!). Along with friendship, inspirational leadership – and fun!

We’re excited to have three evening sessions this term with Rosie Sleightholme, a community choir leader based in South Bristol. A member of the Natural Voice Network, she is passionate about bringing people together through song and absolutely loves the magic that is created through singing in harmony. She welcomes every voice to her groups and teaches by ear, so there is no need to read music.

Brought up in a musical family, multi-instrumentalist and folk singer Rosie has always sung in choirs and performed her own songs at gigs and festivals all over the UK and further afield. She came to choir leading when she was pregnant – setting up a pregnancy choir, then a parent and baby choir, and a regular community choir, all in South Bristol. Her choirs have featured in Classic FM and on BBC TV and radio.

Rosie teaches a range of four part harmony songs from all over the world, keeping a varied repertoire to keep things interesting for choir members, and for her! She also arranges and writes her own songs for choir.

She has been running socially distanced outdoor sessions throughout Covid and has relished being able to continue to keep people connected through song during this time.

Rosie will be leading sessions on Tuesday evenings on 21st Sept, 28th Sept and 16th Nov. You don’t need to commit to all three.

All these and future workshops, evenings and events are listed on the Events page.
